Please join the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (CGRS) for a webinar exploring the intersection of climate-related displacement and the U.S. asylum framework.

An estimated 90% of the world’s refugees come from the countries most vulnerable to, and least prepared for, the impacts of climate change. And the U.S. government and UN Refugee Agency both recognize that people fleeing harms in the context of climate change may have valid claims for asylum. But how do you elicit relevant facts to ensure protection for individuals displaced in the context of the climate emergency? What types of questions do you ask when screening for climate-related harms?

Using real-world examples from Guatemala to elucidate how climate-related factors may interact with other forms of persecution, this webinar will focus on how to identify and analyze U.S. asylum claims involving climate change and environmental disasters, including rapid- and slower-onset climate events, and how to elicit critical facts to support such claims.

Attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance via the registration form, and also during live Q&A. This webinar will be recorded. The recording and materials will be made available to all registrants after the webinar.
