The Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) is launching a new project—a searchable database of qualified and pre-vetted country specialists and health professionals who serve as expert witnesses to support asylum seekers in the United States. This service will be offered to attorneys and experts alike, free of charge. In other areas of the law, the provision of expert witness referrals is highly developed and professionalized, but this will be the first project of its kind to do so in the asylum field. In addition to improving our referrals, which we have been providing through our technical assistance program for many years, CGRS will ramp up trainings for attorneys and experts on the use of expert testimony in immigration court to expand the pool of qualified experts and increase protection for individuals fleeing persecution.

Update: The expert witness database is now live and may be accessed online at https://cgrs.uchastings.edu/expert/search. Please note that in order to access the database advocates must first create an account on CGRS’s website and log in. If you have requested technical assistance from CGRS in the past, you may use the same login credentials to access the database.
