San Francisco, CA– On August 9, 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit granted the petition for review in the case of Cece v. Holder, marking a triumph for gender-based asylum claims. The decision holds that gender may define a particular social group, and recognizes that women fleeing sex trafficking may be eligible for asylum based on membership in such a group. The decision also explains that the fact that a group may be large does not preclude it from being recognized as a social group, and that the definition of the group may include a shared characteristic related to the feared persecution.
