CGRS Responds to Election of Donald Trump

Nov 06, 2024

Donald Trump’s policy agenda threatens the rights and safety of refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and all marginalized communities. In his first term Trump adopted a host of extreme, white supremacist policies that slammed the door on refugees, tore apart immigrant families, and decimated our asylum system. In 2025 he and his allies intend to pick up where they left off, promising an unprecedented regime of mass deportations, internment camps, and an end to refugee protection.

But we have taken Trump on before, and we will not back down this time.

“CGRS remains steadfast in our demand that the United States lives up to its international and domestic legal obligations to protect people fleeing persecution,” Karen Musalo, Director of the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS), said today. “We will continue to fight for the rights of people seeking asylum who look to the United States for safe haven. Now is the moment for our communities to come together and show our leaders that we care for our neighbors, no matter their immigration status. That our country is stronger when we welcome people seeking asylum with dignity. As we look to the next four years, we hold our communities close and resolve to keep fighting together, unified in our hope and vision for a better future.”
