Please join the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies for an in-person training in San Francisco, California. This interactive training will provide space for advocates to share and discuss recent challenges in practice before the Asylum Office as well as Immigration Court. Topics will be determined in part by attendee feedback, but may include responses in the initial I-589 application, changes in questioning at the asylum office, evidentiary considerations in light of the 2024 State Department Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, IJ scheduling orders, etc. You are encouraged to submit questions and topics for discussion in advance on the registration form.
We will also offer a collaborative space to discuss strategies in gender-based and family-based cases impacted by the recent Attorney General decisions re-instating Matter of L-E-A- II, 28 I&N Dec. 581 (A.G. 2019) and Matter of A-B- I, 27 I&N Dec. 316 (A.G. 2018), Matter of A-B- II, 28 I&N Dec, 199 (A.G. 2021) as well as the Board of Immigration Appeals’ decision in Matter of K-E-S-G-, 29 I&N Dec. 145 (BIA 2025). Advocates who are currently working on asylum or withholding claims based on gender or family particular social groups are encouraged to submit their cases to be considered for the workshop:
- Registering the case with CGRS at: https://cgrs.uclawsf.edu/assistance/request.
- Indicating on the registration form your interest in workshopping a case and providing the CGRS Case number(s).
If your case is selected to be workshopped, CGRS will reach out to you for additional information and invite you to present the facts of your case during the workshop. This training will be in-person only; there will not be a virtual option, and it will not be recorded.
