An estimated 90% of the world’s refugees come from the countries most vulnerable to, and least prepared for, the impacts of climate change. The UN Refugee Agency—and even the U.S. government—have both recognized that people fleeing harms in the context of climate change may have valid claims for asylum. But how do you elicit relevant facts to ensure protection for individuals displaced in the context of the climate emergency? What types of questions do you ask when screening for climate-related harms?
Factual development is essential to develop any claim for asylum. But the process can be more difficult and time intensive than many advocates expect. This is especially true for climate-related claims.
Using real-world examples from Haiti to elucidate how climate-related factors may interact with other forms of persecution, this webinar will focus on how to identify and analyze U.S. asylum claims involving climate change and environmental disasters, including rapid- and slower-onset climate events, and how to elicit and incorporate critical facts to support such claims.
